The universe is still a mystery. There is a huge gap between the physics we are familiar with and some of the phenomena that it observes. Currently, there is no way of bridging it and experiments are becoming more expensive, which increases the risk of not being able to understand the universe any more than we already do. Pedro G Ferreira — a professor of astrophysics — examines the reasons behind this and suggests that a rekindling in the relationship between data-driven physicists and 'hardcore theorists' could provide a future of real understanding.
